FULL TERM PREGNANCY

From what Mama had read at the Baby Center, according to a midwife named Clare Herbert, the normal length of pregnancy ranges from 37 weeks to 42 weeks. So, pregnant women have about 5 weeks to wait for the baby to be born at a time that is considered normal.

While Healthline said, although health practitioners set the normal age range of pregnancy to delivery is 37-42 weeks, pregnancy which is categorized as term lasts for 40 weeks.

Healthline also explained that the risk of complications in babies will be at the lowest risk when they are born between 39-41 weeks of gestation. For a more detailed normal gestational age until delivery, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists categorizes it into 4 types of time as follows.

(1) Initial period: 37 weeks to 38 weeks, 6 days.
(2) Full term: 39 weeks to 40 weeks, 6 days.
(3) Late: 41 weeks to 41 weeks, 6 days.
(4) Postsemester: 42 weeks onwards.

From all the explanation above, Healthline formulates that premature birth occurs when they are born before the 37th week and postmature birth when they pass 42 weeks of gestation. While the normal range is from 37 to 42 weeks, and at most months for 40 weeks.

Actually, some pregnant women also have an Estimated Birth Day (HPL). Even though there is HPL, the Baby Center explains that only about one in 25 babies can be born on their due date.

Most babies tend to be born between 37 weeks to 41 weeks gestation or within a week around HPL. According to the Mayo Clinic, the cause of a pregnant woman giving birth but passing the due date is an error in determining the First Day of the Last Menstruation (LMP).

In addition to errors in determining HPHT, this condition can also be caused by pregnant women who experience obsession or problems with the placenta and fetus. It is also important to note that although the normal gestational age is 37 to 42 weeks, for pregnant women carrying twins, their babies will most likely be born prematurely or before the 37th week of gestation. In the case of giving birth to twins, birth before the normal limit is still fairly normal, pregnant women.

Factors Affecting the Length of Gestational Age

1. Causes of Babies Born Premature

According to Healthline, there are several factors that cause a baby to be born prematurely. Among others are:

1. pregnant with twins,
2. bleeding during pregnancy,
3. abuse drugs,
4. have a urinary tract infection,
5. smoking and drinking alcohol,
6. previous preterm birth experience,
7. infection of the amniotic membranes,
8. unhealthy eating patterns,
9. weak cervix,
10. obesity and underweight, or
11. too stressed.

It should also be noted that there are risks that threaten babies born prematurely. Among them are bleeding in the brain and lungs, delayed development of the body later, difficulty breathing, experiencing vision and hearing problems, difficulty breastfeeding, jaundice, and difficulty regulating body temperature.

To prevent premature birth, pregnant women are advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods and getting enough sleep and avoiding stress.

2. Causes of Postmature Births

The opposite of preterm birth is postmature birth or past the gestation period until a normal delivery, which is above 42 weeks. According to Healthline, there are several causes for this postterm birth. Among others are:

1. first pregnancy,
2. have a history of giving birth to a postmature baby,
3. heredity,
4. pregnant women are obese,
5. the baby being conceived is a boy, and
6. The HPHT date is incorrectly calculated.

While the risk that threatens the postmature baby is developing serious breathing problems, the baby's heart rate slows down, and eventual death before birth. To prevent postterm birth, pregnant women are advised to consult a doctor so that several medical procedures can be carried out, such as labor induction.
