Reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social health, not merely free from diseases related to reproductive systems, functions and processes.
Teenage pregnancy has a negative impact on the health of adolescents and their babies, it can also have social and economic impacts. Pregnancy at a young age or adolescence includes the risk of premature birth, low birth weight (LBW), childbirth bleeding, which can increase maternal and infant mortality. Teenage pregnancies are also associated with unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions.
Childbirth to mothers under the age of 20 has contributed to the high mortality rate of neonates, infants, and toddlers. The 2012 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) showed that the mortality rate for mothers aged 20-39 years was higher than that of mothers aged 20-39 years.
Marriage at a young age is at risk because there is not enough readiness in terms of health, mental emotional, educational, socio-economic, and reproductive aspects. Age maturation is also related to birth control because the length of a woman's fertile period is related to the number of children that will be born.
This is caused by insufficient knowledge of adolescents about reproductive health. The results of the 2012 IDHS show that adolescent knowledge about reproductive health is inadequate, which can be seen with only 35.3% of female adolescents and 31.2% of male adolescents aged 15-19 years knowing that women can get pregnant with one sexual intercourse.
Similarly, the symptoms of PMS are less known by teenagers. Information about HIV is relatively more received by adolescents, although only 9.9% of girls and 10.6% of boys have comprehensive knowledge about HIV-AIDS.
