4 Common Causes of Back Pain

There are various causes of back pain, from muscle tension to arthritis. This condition can actually heal by itself. However, in certain cases, back pain can worsen or become frequent recurrences that require appropriate treatment.

Back pain is pain in the lower back or sides. This pain often radiates to the legs, groin, or genitals. Usually, the pain gets worse when you walk, bend over, or lift heavy objects. Sometimes, back pain is accompanied by other symptoms, such as a stiff waist, or even numbness in the leg area.

Causes of Back Pain

There are various causes of back pain and the following are some of the common conditions that can trigger back pain:

1. Muscles tense
Tense muscles are often the cause of back pain. This condition usually occurs due to excessive activity, such as lifting heavy weights or sitting for too long in the wrong position.

In addition, these tense muscles can also occur due to repetitive or sudden movements that support the waist, such as movements during tennis, basketball, or golf.

2. pinched nerves
Pinched nerves due to protrusion or shifting of the spinal discs can also cause back pain. This condition is usually caused by injury, the habit of lifting things that are too heavy, or being overweight.

The pain that appears is usually stabbing and can radiate to the buttocks or thighs. Another symptom of a pinched nerve is tingling or numbness in the leg area.

3. Arthritis
Inflammation that occurs in the joints of the spine can also be a cause of back pain. This condition is often triggered by osteoarthritis, which occurs due to the thinning or breakdown of cartilage in the joints.

4. Osteoporosis
Another cause of back pain is osteoporosis. This condition occurs due to loss of bone density which causes bones to become porous and break easily, which can cause symptoms of back pain.

Risk Factors for Back Pain

In addition to the conditions above, there are various other factors that can increase the risk of back pain, including:

Lack of exercise

Infrequent or lack of exercise is at risk of causing back pain. This is because the muscles around the spine become weak and stiff, which can cause pain.

Age

Back pain is generally more common with age. This condition is often experienced by the age group of 30 or 40 years.

Overweight

Back pain can also occur due to being overweight. This is because excess weight can put too much pressure on the lower back, which can cause back pain.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, pregnant women will experience hormonal changes and stretching of the ligaments that can cause pressure and pain in the upper and lower back.

In addition, certain diseases, such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, endometriosis, pelvic inflammation, and aortic aneurysms can also trigger back pain.

As previously explained, most back pain will get better on its own. However, to reduce the pain that appears, you can do some simple ways at home, such as compresses using cold or warm water, moderate exercise, and adequate rest.

In general, back pain can be prevented from the start by exercising regularly, maintaining an ideal body weight, working in an upright sitting position, avoiding lifting too much weight, and using comfortable footwear.

That's a series of causes of back pain that can occur. If you experience it and have tried several ways to deal with back pain above, but the back pain does not improve, immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment.
