Guide to Choosing Contraceptives That Don't Cause Acne |
There are many options for contraception, from birth control pills, condoms, implants, to IUDs. Each contraceptive has its own advantages, disadvantages, and side effects. One type of contraception that is widely used in Indonesia is hormonal contraception, such as birth control pills, injectable contraceptives, and implants. Each hormonal contraceptive has a different content.
Because the ingredients are different, the side effects can also be different. However, the side effects of the same contraceptive can vary from person to person. One of the most common side effects of hormonal contraceptives is acne.
How to Choose Contraceptives That Don't Cause Acne
Using hormonal contraception can suppress androgen hormone levels in a woman's body. When hormonal contraceptives are no longer used, androgen levels will automatically rise again. Increased levels of androgen hormones can trigger excessive production of natural oils in the skin. Excess oil can clog pores and trap dead skin and dirt, which can eventually lead to acne breakouts.
However, there are contraceptives that do not cause acne, namely contraceptives containing Drospirenone. Just like other hormonal contraceptives, this contraceptive can also inhibit the activity of androgen hormones that cause acne. Even so, research shows that taking Drospirenone for 6 months can reduce acne. Drospirenone is thought to be even more effective in treating acne than norgestimate and chlormadinone acetate.
Therefore, it is not surprising that contraceptives containing Drospirenone have been widely used to treat acne in women aged at least 14 years. In addition, premenstrual dysphoric disorder can also be treated using Drospirenone.
Understanding the rules for using contraceptives
Hormonal contraceptives containing Drospirenone are available in the form of birth control pills. To use this birth control pill, it is recommended to follow the directions of the doctor, namely:
- Drink at the same time every day, for example at 12 noon
- Can be taken after eating or before eating
- Follow the flow of drinking on the packaging, from the first pill to the last
- Don't miss a dose of birth control pills
Pregnancy can occur if you don't take the pill within 24 hours, are late for a new birth control pill if the old pack has run out, or take birth control pills at irregular times each day. Just like other contraceptives, birth control pills that contain Drospirenone can also cause side effects. The most common side effects include:
- Nauseous
- Stomach ache
- Emotional changes
- Headaches, including migraines
- Breast pain
- Weight gain
- Spots outside the menstrual cycle
While some of the rare side effects include:
- Vomit
- Diarrhea
- Swelling of the ankles
- Skin rash
- Hives
- Breast enlargement
Although almost never found, but some of the following side effects may occur:
- Discharge from the nipple
- Allergy to contact lenses
- Blood clots either in veins or arteries
- Immune system hypersensitivity
- Dilation of blood vessels so that they appear as red patches (erythema)
If you want to use contraceptives that contain Drospirenone or any hormonal contraceptives, you should first consult with your doctor. Likewise if you experience various side effects after taking the Drospirenone birth control pill.
